Okuma Makaira LBS 80 vs 80W vs 130: Which Reel Size Do You Actually Need
Share
By Dylan Wier, Coastal Worldwide. Reviewed September 2026.
The Okuma Makaira LBS 80 and the 80W run the same 3.1:1 and 1.2:1 two-speed gearing and the same drag system. The difference between them is the frame and the spool. The 80 has a topless frame and a compact spool that holds about 850 yards of 200 lb braid. The 80W has a wide spool that holds about 1,200 yards. The 130 holds about 1,500 yards and runs a 2.2:1 high gear for the biggest baits and the longest drops. If you are buying one reel to chase big sharks from the beach, buy the 80W.
That is the short answer. The rest of this post is written for three people: the guy building his own land-based setup who wants to spend his money once, the guy who is thinking about getting into shark fishing and wants to understand the gear, and the guy about to book a trip who wants to know what he will be holding. Everyone gets something out of it as long as you care about picking the right reel.
Quick framing. Coastal Worldwide is a land-based shark fishing charter. We fish from the sand, no boat, on the Gulf Coast from Pensacola to Fort Morgan, and our guides have up to twelve years of land-based shark fishing experience. We helped Okuma design the Makaira SEa LBS line, and it is field-tested by Coastal Worldwide on every trip we run.

Four Sizes in the Makaira SEa LBS Series, and the Three We Stock
Okuma builds the Makaira SEa LBS in four sizes: the 50W, the 80, the 80W, and the 130. Okuma's product page lists the gearing for all four, with 3.2:1 and 1.3:1 on the 50W, 3.1:1 and 1.2:1 on the 80 and 80W, and 2.2:1 and 1.2:1 on the 130. We stock three of the four.
The 50W is a fine reel for smaller sharks, ideally under ten feet, if spooled correctly and drag set correctly. But there are plenty of fish out there that will put that reel to the test, and when they do, you will wish you had the 80W or the 130. We would rather send you home with something you will not need to replace.
Why Spool Size Decides Which Makaira LBS You Need
On a land-based shark fishing reel, spool size is the spec that changes how you fish. We drop our big baits by kayak, usually 200 to 400 yards off the beach, past the second sandbar, because a longer drop is how you reach bigger sharks. A wider spool gives you more line capacity, and that capacity is what lets you put a bait further out and still have a working spool of braid left on the reel.
Capacity also lets you fill the reel with 200 lb braid. Heavy braid lets you run proper heavy drag, and heavy drag keeps fight times short. A short fight is the whole point. It is better for you, and it means a healthy, clean release for the shark, especially one you are required to let go.
So when you compare these three reels, you are choosing how far you want to fish and how much heavy line you want behind the bait. Power, gearing on the 80 and 80W, and build quality stay the same.
Okuma Makaira LBS 80: Topless Frame, Lighter Footprint
The Makaira LBS 80 is the compact-frame version of the 80W. It is lighter and it holds less line, about 850 yards of 200 lb braid, with the same big-shark power and the same 3.1:1 and 1.2:1 gearing.
It is also the only reel in the series with a topless frame. There is no crossbar over the spool, which gives you easy access to manage your line with your hands during a fight. That was one of the things we asked Okuma for, and it makes line control easier.
Buy the 80 if you want Makaira power in a lighter reel and you value that open frame. It pairs with an LBS Shark Series rod in either the 50-130 or the 80-130 line class. You can see it on the Okuma Makaira LBS 80 product page.
Okuma Makaira 80W: Our Go-To for Big Game Sharks
If you ask us for one reel to chase big fish from shore, the answer is the Okuma Makaira 80W. It is the primary big-bait reel in the series and our go-to for big game sharks. Same gearing as the 80, a wide spool, and about 1,200 yards of 200 lb braid. The 80W does not carry the topless frame. It trades that open top for spool width, and that extra capacity is the reason to buy it.
If you have been searching for an 80 wide shark reel, this is the one we fish. In January 2026, on Pensacola Beach, the 80W helped us catch the biggest great white shark we have ever seen, in about 45 minutes. We did not target it. Great whites are a protected species in Florida, and we kept it in the water. Researchers estimated it at around 1,800 pounds, and it swam off. The full story is in our great white catch and release write-up. We practice safe catch and release shark fishing for conservation, and a reel that ends the fight fast is part of how we do it.
Buy the 80W if you are buying one reel, if you want to drop big baits a long way out, or if you want the size we recommend first to anyone chasing big fish from shore. It pairs with the LBS Shark Series 80-130 rods. Shop the Okuma Makaira LBS 80W.
Okuma Makaira LBS 130: Big Baits, Long Drops, the Biggest Sharks
The 130 is the big-bait, big-shark reel. Anywhere you need to drop far distances, or you are hooking the biggest sharks of your life, this is the reel. It holds about 1,500 yards of 200 lb braid, the most in the series.
The 130 also carries its own gearing, 2.2:1 in high and 1.2:1 in low. A 2.2:1 high gear picks up less line per turn of the handle than the 3.1:1 on the 80 and 80W, and in exchange you get more pulling power on every turn.
The 130 works year-round and coast to coast. East Coast, West Coast, Gulf Coast. Monster bulls, big game sharks, and everything in between. Buy it if long drops and the biggest sharks within reach of the beach are what you are after. It pairs with the 80-130 rods. Shop the Okuma Makaira LBS 130.
What Every Okuma Makaira SEa LBS Size Shares
Outside of spool, frame top, and the 130's gearing, you get the same reel at every size. From Okuma's spec page: a 6061-T6 machined aluminum frame with forged sideplates, 17-4 stainless steel helical cut gears, a cold forged, Type-II anodized machined aluminum spool, the Carbonite Dual Force drag, both an aggressive drag cam and a TDC cam, a 125mm extended handle arm with a T-bar knob, ABEC-5 stainless bearings, a heavy-duty stainless ratcheting clicker, and a 5-year limited warranty. We break down what each of those does on the beach in our Okuma Makaira LBS reel review.
The drag range carries across the series too. We set our Makaira LBS reels at 35 lb at strike, measured at home on a crane scale, because they reach about 75 lb at full. Most reels on the market only gain five to ten pounds between strike and full. Every size in the series will put out 100 lb of drag or more when it is set correctly. That high top end is room to push when a big shark needs to come in fast.
The spooling and drag procedure is the same on all three sizes, and it is laid out step by step in how to spool a shark fishing reel. We also teach how we set strike drag before we ever get to the beach at https://catchmoresharks.com, which is our free shark fishing course and community.
Matching an LBS Shark Series Rod to Your Reel
Match the rod's line class to the reel. The 80, 80W, and 130 all pair with the 80-130 rods. The 80 also pairs with the 50-130 rods.
The LBS Basic 80-130 is a 7'6" one-piece rod with a machined aluminum reel seat and gimbal. The LBS Premium 80-130 is the flagship of the series, a 7'9" two-piece rod with an ALPS RX roller tip and a detachable aluminum butt. Both come out of the same line of rods we helped Okuma design, and you can see all four in the Okuma LBS rods collection. Finish the setup with a Terra Firma Tackle leader, the only leader brand we fish. Our land-based shark fishing combo guide lays out every reel and rod pairing in one place.
How We Fish All Three Sizes on Our Charters
On a normal trip, the 80W goes on the primary big-bait rods, 80s go on the secondary rods, and a 130 goes out when we want the most line capacity and drag pressure on the biggest fish. Baits go out by kayak, and the rods sit in the sand with the drag backed off and the clicker on.
The fastest way to know which size fits you is to fight a shark on one. Every beach shark fishing trip we run puts these reels in your hands, on Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach, and Perdido Key.
We know there is a lot to learn in shark fishing. Our six-hour trip is our cheapest trip, and we structure trips for tourists and shark fishermen alike. If you book as a shark fishing guy, tell us, and we will spend the whole trip teaching you everything we know, reels included, so you do not have to book a second trip to get the answers. Questions about a specific reel before you buy? Send them through our contact page and Dylan or Blaine will answer.
Where to Buy the Okuma Makaira SEa LBS
Okuma does not sell the Makaira SEa LBS online. Its own product page lists the reel as not available for online purchase and sends you to a dealer locator. Coastal Worldwide is an authorized Okuma dealer, and all three sizes we fish are on our site in the Okuma LBS reels collection. The full lineup of reels and rods lives on our Okuma fishing products page.
Here is the part Okuma cannot offer and Amazon does not know exists. When you order a Makaira SEa LBS reel from Coastal Worldwide, we can spool the reel for you and set your drag, with a complimentary heavy mono top shot, all done for you. Shop the Ready-to-Rig Shark System here.
